The GROK Lab is currently sponsering the City High Juggernauts in their first year participating in a competition sponsered by FIRST (For Ispiration and Recognition of Science and Technology). FIRST is a non-profit organization dedicated to generating interest in science and engineering among today's youth. The competition the Juggernauts are participating in is the robot competition, which emphasizes mechanical and electrical engineering. In addition to the GROK Lab (through the UI College of Engineering), the Juggernauts are also being sponsered by Rockwell , the Iowa Space Consortium , and John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center.
So, here's how it works exactly: Every year, the robot has a different task that it must be designed and built to perform. This year the robot has to collect, transport and position balls during the 2 minute competition. The students are given six weeks to design, build and test their robot. At that point, the robot is shipped down to Epcot Center in Orlando, Florida to await the competition.
The GROK Lab provides technical support for the Juggernauts. However, we have found this group of future engineers and scientists to be quite self-sufficient!
